crater lake connected facts that I have just been reading.

We'd both lived and traveled throughout the northwestern parts of the US but neither of us had been to Crater Lake since the late 1950's or early 60's. Crater Lake was on our way from Eagle Lake, California, where I'd had the opportunity to sail for the first time in twenty years, to our next WWOOFing (worldwide opportunities on organic farms) adventure in Prospect, Oregon. We only had a few hours but it was an afternoon well spent.

The water changes color with the depth and the type of lake bottom (sand, volcanic rock, etc.). We arrived at the first viewpoint to find snow still under the trees, and even in the open where the sun hadn't had a chance to sufficiently heat the ground. We were there the sixteenth of July.

Wildflowers poked their heads out from the edges of snow banks and chipmunks sat on the stone walls waiting to see if we'd brought them any goodies to eat, and hopefully enough extra to store some for the following winter. A couple of Gray Jays, also known as "camp robbers" because of their daring feats of stealing food from the picnic tables right under the noses of the picnickers, sat a few feet away. Another bird, a Clark's Nutcracker, came to sit and partake of the pumpkin seeds that we shared from our food stash in the car.

Wizard Island, Llao Rock and The Phantom Ship all tell tales of how the massive crater, or caldera, was formed. South facing rock escarpments were in bloom with yellow and green lichen. Below the cliffs, where there was protection from the wind, the water was yellow with lichen that had blown from the cliffs exposed rock faces.

Snow fed waterfalls joined others to become large boulder rattling creeks. In the valley below, creeks became rivers and then rushed off on their journey to Klamath Lake, or possibly the Rogue River and then the Pacific Ocean.

Lunchtime, consisting of sandwiches made from our cooler, was attended by chipmunks and an occasional bird swooping down for a quick snack. The birds had to be quick, because chipmunks are and they don't miss much. Chipmunks are amazing, they can be going full speed in one direction and in less than a blink of the eye be going the opposite way. It's almost as if they turn themselves inside out.

Late in the afternoon, we reluctantly bid farewell to the lake, the birds, the flowers and the chipmunks. We vowed to return again when we had, at least, an entire day to spend.

The chipmunks at Crater Lake deserve a slideshow of their own and I will be posting a chipmunk slideshow on Associated Content in the next few days. The search title will be Chipmunks of Crater Lake. I was recently scanning this about the cleveland show episode 1 and thought it would make a essential post to my web logs.

The story going around that Conan O'Brien was injured during the taping of Friday's "The Tonight Show" resulting in a re-run being aired is true. It seems that Conan O'Brien was injured doing a stunt for the show. NBC has released few details, according to the New York Daily News, but it is known that Conan O'Brien suffered a head injury. It is not known exactly how he received the injury but it is known that it has not affected his sense of humor (or lack thereof, depending on one's view).

In a statement issued through NBC, O'Brien said, "Last thing I remember I was enjoying the play with Mrs. Lincoln, and the next thing I knew I was in bed being served cookies and juice."

(Aside: Who drinks juice with their cookies? And a post-Civil War joke? It's jokes like that that make one wonder if the 46-year-old comedian might have actually heard a truly funny joke and the trauma of the acknowledgment made his head spin...)

The extent of O'Brien's injury is not known. Reportedly, the injured Conan O'Brien will be able to host Monday's "The Tonight Show."

Audiences were treated to a repeat of an episode with Jeremy Piven of "Entourage" and mercury poisoning fame. What the audience missed was an episode that would have included Teri Hatcher of "Desperate Housewives" and "Family Guy" creator Seth McFarlane. People will have to wait for another interview to find out what future Seth McFarlane's role will be on ABC's new drama "Flash Forward." Seth McFarlane also debuts a new animated show this season with "Family Guy" spin-off "The Cleveland Show."

But the biggest disappointment of the show being cancelled and perhaps never rescheduled is that musical guests Rodrigo y Gabriela. For those unfamiliar with the duo's work, just check them out on YouTube. There are numerous videos of their fabulous performances there. Rodrigo y Gabriela specialize in a dueling harmonic style of acoustic guitar playing that is first class. Their live rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" has been viewed over 4.4 million times. A lively performance of "Diablo Rojo" on "The Late Show with David Letterman" has been viewed nearly 800,000 times.

Conan O'Brien being injured and having to halt production on the "Tonight Show" recalls his predecessor's extremely rare absences (besides vacations). O'Brien took over for Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show" in June. After 17 years, Jay Leno stepped down and took over a nightly 10 p.m. slot on NBC.
